What is the Durham Wrestling Club?

The Club was started by our founder Joe Kaye in the fall of 1994. Over the years we have worked hard to develop a fun and safe environment for kids to learn the great sport of wrestling.  Our practice facility is located at the Durham High School wrestling room and is the home of the Durham Wrestling Club. Our home dual-meets are held either at the Durham Intermediate Gym “DIG” or in conjunction with the High School team.

 

Where does the Durham Wrestling Club fit into the bigger picture?

The Durham Wrestling Club competes in the South League division of the Nor Cal Jr. High Wrestling Section. For more information of the Nor Cal Jr. High Wrestling Section Rules, go to www.norcaljrhighwrestling.com.

How much does it cost to wrestle?

The registration fees for 2017-2018 are as follows:

$85 For sign up gets kids team sweatshirt and pays for Coaches.

USA Wrestling Insurance ($46) must be purchased by parents and given a copy of the card to club before participation is allowed.

K through 8th Grade= $100 for all tournaments (Optional for kids who are going to tournaments).  You can also pay as you go to tournaments.

Uniforms for kids who are going to tournaments can be purchased on team cite (see welcome page) – kids will also be provided singlets if they can not afford the uniform, or wish to wear a singlet instead.

*The equipment contract must be signed prior to your athlete getting any equipment.                                                

 

What other costs should be anticipated?

You are responsible to provide wrestling and running shoes, headgear, water bottle, mouthpiece (mandatory if you wear braces) and kneepads (optional).

Where are matches held?

Home dual meets may be held at the Durham Intermediate Gym “DIG” or Durham High Gym, Home Tournament/s is at DHS Gym. Away competitions are held either at prospective high schools or junior high schools.

 How many matches (dual meets & tournaments) can I expect this year?

The Durham Wrestling Club hopes to have some scheduled dual meets (depending on participation levels) and 10 to 12 tournaments on our  schedule each year. (See posted schedule on this cite).

 When does the season start?

Practice officially starts the second week of November  and will end in early March.

  How often are the practices?

The Durham Wrestling Club practices will be held in the Durham High wrestling room. Team practices will be split up into two time frames:

K through 3rd grade: 6:15pm to 7:15 pm on Mondays & Wednesdays.

4th through 8th grade: 6:15pm to 7:45 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays.

Wrestle-offs will be held on Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s if needed.

During the Holidays, the practice schedule will be subject to change and everyone will be notified accordingly.

What is the age group?

Kindergarten through 8th Grade = 5 years old to 15 years old.

What schools are involved?

The Durham Wrestling Club consists of students from the following schools.

Public Schools – Durham Elementary and Durham Jr. High, other area public schools with permission.

Private Schools – Chico Christian, Notre Dame, Chico Country Day and home school.

The students-athletes that attend Durham Jr. High School feed into Durham High School

What are the weight classes?

Elementary consists of 19 weight classes:

40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 76, 83, 89, 95, 103, 112, 116, 122, 128, 135, 142, Hwt (max 168).

Junior High consists of 19 weight classes:

70, 76, 83, 89, 95, 100, 103, 108, 112, 116, 122, 128, 135, 142, 153, 168, 185, 205, 235.

What is the eligibility?

All wrestlers must meet the academic requirements of the school they attend. The Durham Wrestling Club requires a 2.0 GPA to compete. Some parents may have additional academic requirements; this can be discussed with the Coaching staff and Board.

Will I have to volunteer?

Yes. We may have various work days scheduled for improving the club facilities. We also need assistance with our fundraising events and our tournament and matches.  We appreciate all your support and assistance.  There will be notifications throughout the season.

Can I get a business to sponsor my wrestler?

Yes. Any business can provide a portion, half or entire amount of the registration fees. Businesses will be acknowledged through our donation criteria.
